Ft. Lauderdale

Still in Ft. Lauderdale today. Ran up New River a good number of miles to the west of I-95/I-595/SR-84. Afterward getting back to the ICW, we headed south past Port Everglades ship terminal area and went west in the Dania Cutoff canal. The New River and the Dania Cuttoff canal are connected--as you can see in the aerial photo above--but we don't know what the water depths are to the west of where we went nor if there are bridges with less than an air draft of 8.5 feet or so. I guess we should have kept going and found out! Upper 60s and winds NW5 knots.

Stopped for an hour or so at the 15th St. boat launch dock. This British catamaran did so as well since he was getting a new inflatable delivered at the launch ramp.

Where the New River meets the ICW you better not stray out of the channel, as this cruising sailboat found out. Luckily, they got off on the rising tide and with a little help from Towboat/US.

Megayachts under refit at one of the many yards catering to them along the Dania cutoff canal.

Not all vessels are typical down here.

Further west on the Dania cutoff canal there's a number of fixed bridges--this one is I-95--and they are low.

This bridge we passed under also constricts the flow of water. I believe we saw 4 knots of ebb tide current.

One of our favorite seafood restaurants *anywhere* is the Rustic Inn--absolutely world's best garlic crabs. Secret wok-cooked with either the traditional smallish blue crabs or the dungeness crab caught off the Pacific. Their colossal King crabs are great as well and as long as your arm (no joke). Their docks didn't suit us so we docked at a Broward county boat park just west of them and dinghied over to the Rustic Inn. Since we didn't want to spend the night there we motored back to Lake Sylvia, arriving at dusk 6:20pm.
